GRAAFF-REINET NEWS — On Saturday, October 21, Union's U.11 cricketers played a 40 over match against Lorraine Primary.
Lorraine won the toss and elected to bat first. Although the Union boys were not used to the concrete pitch and the bowlers struggled to bowl a consistent line and length, their poor fielding also let them down, which allowed Lorraine to score 223 for 4 in 40 overs.
The top bowlers were Shakir Kazi, who took two wickets for 38 runs in 8 overs, and Dylan Kivedo, who also took two wickets for 42 in 8 overs.
The Union boys also struggled with their bowling and were soon 28 for 5 after 6 overs. Cullen Marais and Thokozani Mpanza put on a tenacious 50 run partnership, occupying the crease for almost 16 overs. However, Union had another batting collapse and lost their last 5 wickets for only 10 runs in 7.1 overs, and got bowled out for 89 runs. Cullen Marais top scored with 41 runs.
Union lost the match by 134 runs.
In their match, the U.13 boys batted first and managed to score only 79 runs. This was disappointing after a good week of preparation. Brent Hesselink, Matthew Basson and Kwande Mhlabeni each scored 12 runs.
Lorraine chased down the total in the 12th over of their innings. Hlali Skepe and Laythan Carelse each took a wicket. Hopefully, the U.13 boys will learn from this experience and put together a much-improved performance on Thursday against Gill College.
Union lost the match by 8 wickets.
