CRICKET NEWS - On Saturday morning, 11 November, the Stallions Cricket Club faced Masizakhe One Cricket Club in a local derby at the Botanics Grounds in Graaff-Reinet in a 50-over game.
Stallions batted first on a hot, windless day and after an opening partnership of 78 runs, amassed a respectable score of 245 runs all out in 47,3 overs.
Donovan Joubert, who is in good form, scored 56 runs, ably supported by Stewart Basson with 54.
Skipper JP Phillips contributed 42 runs. Chris-Jan (CJ) Lewack turned on the heat for Masizakhe One, claiming six wickets.
After the innings break, Masizakhe set about chasing down the 246 runs needed for victory. CJ Lewack turned on the heat once again with the willow and scored 56 runs.
B Babers shared an 88-run partnership with Lewack that went a long way in securing a win for Masizakhe One.
There is an adage in cricket that "catches win matches" and Lewack and Babers were both dropped twice in their stay at the crease.
A flurry of wickets near the end of the game by Benjamin September gave Stallions a faint glimmer of smuggling victory, but the Masizakhe tail kept wagging and the winning runs were scored with eight overs to spare.
A win for Masizakhe 1 with 8 wickets down.
