CRICKET NEWS - The 17th annual Senior Cricket Festival was launched at a cocktail function at the Tony Burrell Union where the visiting teams were welcomed in Graaff-Reinet on 10 January. As is tradition, the festival was hosted by Union High School and sponsored by Standard Bank.
On Wednesday 10 January, arriving teams engaged in practice matches at the Botanics grounds. Festival matches kicked off on Thursday 11 January, and were held across Union's Murray and Puttick fields, Botanics Sports Club, Hoër Volkskool, Asante Sana Private Game Reserve, and Wheatlands Farm.
This year's event featured teams from twelve schools participating in T20s, declaration matches, and 50-over encounters. The twelve schools were Stirling High School, Edgemead High, Westering High, Hoërskool DF Malherbe, Hoër Tegniese Skool Daniel Pienaar Technical High School, Lilyfontein, Hoërskool Nico Malan, Victoria Park High, Rand Park High, Fairmont High, Cradock High and Union High.
On the first day of the festival, teams competed in their declaration matches. The first match of the day took place between Union and Edgemead on the Murray Field.
Concurrently, Stirling faced off against Daniël Pienaar on the Puttick Field. DF Malherbe and Westering engaged in competition at Hoër Volkskool, while Lilyfontein and Victoria Park clashed at Botanics.
Rand Park and Nico Malan went head-to-head at Asante Sana Game Reserve, and Cradock took on Fairmont at Wheatlands Farm.
