ABERDEEN SPORT NUUS - Jadene Nyssen and Ronaldino Skaarnek, learners at Aberdeen Secondary School, ran for gold in the district-level school athletics competition hosted in Gqeberha on 16 February.
Nyssen placed first in the 1 500m and won silver in both the 400m and 800m items. Skaarnek took gold in the 400m and bronze in the 200m.
These achievements afforded them places in the Sarah Baartman District team and they will compete at provincial level in the next round of athletics to be hosted in East London.
Teacher Marius Frazenburg says the date of the event is yet to be announced.
The six athletes from Aberdeen Secondary School who were part of the DBN team were Jadene Nyssen, Ronaldino Skaarnek, Ameraah Jacobs, Ronald Saayman, ZinZan Flippies and Igmaan Mahane.
Flippies placed fourth in the 200m, and Mahane sixth. Ameraah Jacobs and Ronald Saayman each had a stroke of bad luck - the team arrived in Gqeberha only after Jacobs's item had taken place, while Saayman sustained an injury.
