GRAAFF-REINET NEWS — Several Graaff-Reinetters, many of whom representing the Graaff-Reinet Running Club, participated in the Infantry School Cango Marathon 2017 in Oudtshoorn this past Saturday.
The half-marathon (21,1km) kicked off at 6am at the Ou Tol ending at the Oudtshoorn's military base's sports grounds.
Stefan Steynberg was the first Graaff-Reinetter to cross the finish line (1.40.31), followed by Ilze Nel (1.41.58), Marnice Pieterse (1.44.42), Madel Piek (1.58.08), Wybrand Marais (2.11.17), Sophia du Plessis (2.11.46), Alet Liebenberg (2.11.46), Wilfred van der Merwe (2.56.35) and Johanna van der Merwe (2.56.35).
The 42,2km marathon, staring at the Cango Caves and also finishing at the sports grounds, was attempted by three local athletes.
Here Elise Steynberg came in first among those from Graaff-Reinet (4.34.15), followed by Malinda Piek (5.07.06) and Chade Bowles (5.07.06).
