ROBERT SOBUKWE TOWN NEWS - With the lights dimmed and a stage shimmering beneath the glow of hundreds of candles, there was something quite special about walking into Union High School’s hall on the night of 24 June.
As each young performer entered the darkened hall carrying a single candle of their own, they added it to the growing sea of light, creating a wonderful sense that everyone present was about to share in something memorable.
The programme for the Classics by Candlelight music evening, presented by the primary school department, showed that the children of Robert Sobukwe Town can stand their own in the world of music.
Celebrating the timeless beauty of classical music, pieces by much-loved composers such as Tchaikovsky, Debussy, Schubert, Dvoák, Brahms, Rossini, Strauss, Pachelbel and Vivaldi were performed.
Adding to the evening’s enjoyment were uplifting choir performances and a lively performance by the marimba ensemble.
Sisters Jenelle and Shana Theron took to the stage together, and memories were made when Jenelle’s beautiful vocals were accompanied by her younger sister on piano. Their polished performance came from the heart and reminded everyone of the joy of making music together.
Sanette Brink, the facilitator behind every confident performance, was commended for her passion, patience and dedication that continue to nurture a genuine love of music in her learners.
Kat Ott and Karen Scott’s hard work and exquisite decor had transformed the hall into a warm, enchanting setting.
