KAROO NEWS - The Inxuba Yethemba Municipality council which serves the Middelburg and Cradock districts, saw a recent shuffle in their top structure, with the ANC retaining power.
The council consists of 18 seats, of which 11 are occupied by the ANC, and seven by the DA.
During 2019, the then Mayor Ray Shweni, and other councillors were named in a report by Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane on the misuse of taxpayers' money in the municipality.
Shweni, the ANC Chief Whip, Thembisile Bobo, as well as other members of Council eventually resigned on 26 February this year. Noncedo Zonke, former Integrated Planning and Economic Development Director, was then appointed as mayor.
The municipality's Communication Manager Sonwa Bise, confirmed on Monday 9 March that a former mayor, Nyaneka Goniwe, was voted in as Speaker, replacing Maria Nortjé. Nortjé will take the seat as Chief Whip.
