NATIONAL NEWS - Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa says gender-based violence is undermining government’s efforts to create a caring society, where women and children can walk freely in the streets.
Answering questions in the National Assembly on Wednesday, Ramaphosa said if the country is to succeed in overcoming gender-based violence, its causes needed to be effectively understood.
He says government’s Integrated Plan of Action on gender-based violence was aimed at transforming attitudes, practice and behaviour but that rooting out the scourge had to become a societal responsibility.
“The struggle against violence against women cannot be left to government alone or the public representatives that are in this House. It must be embraced by all South Africans, men in particularly, to ensure that we act decisively to end this scourge of violence against women and children.”
