GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - The Eastern Cape matriculants of the Class of 2024 will forever be remembered for their record-breaking 84,98% matric pass rate, the province's best result since 1994.

The Eastern Cape's pass rate has been rising steadily for the past four years.

"The Eastern Cape matrics of 2024 have achieved a record performance and must be commended," said Horatio Hendricks, the DA Shadow MEC for Education.

He congratulated every matriculant, particularly the 45 662 learners who achieved bachelor passes, setting a new standard of excellence in the Eastern Cape.

One of the schools that contributed to the record performance of the province, is Marlow Agricultural High School in Inxuba, formerly Cradock, that achieved a remarkable 100% pass rate.

With an average pass rate of 98,1% Union High did Graaff-Reinet proud.

Union High's Joy Merifield is the school's top performer of 2024, boasting an impressive six distinctions and an average pass rate of 88,29%.

Hoër Volkskool's average is an excellent 96,9% and Christiaan Blignaut is the school's top matriculant of 2024, also achieving six distinctions.

Mayor on highs and lows

Mayor Willem Safers of the Dr Beyers Naudé Local Municipality, extended his congratulations to all learners and educators, parents and the community for their efforts and commitment throughout the 2024 matriculation journey.

"The result reflects both the achievements and challenges faced over the past few years, with a mix of significant improvements in some schools, consistent excellence in some and unfortunately a decline in performance in certain areas," he said.

"Looking ahead we remain focused on improving educational outcomes for all. We will continue to invest in our schools, provide targeted support where needed and work with the Department of Education, community leaders and stake holders to ensure that no learner is left behind," Safers said.
