NATIONAL NEWS - The Presidency has announced that the National Health Insurance (NHI) Bill will be signed into law by Cyril Ramaphosa at the Union Buildings in Pretoria at 14:00 today.
In a media alert issued yesterday, the Presidency said that the bill will direct the ‘transformation of the South Africa’s healthcare system to achieve universal coverage for health services and, through this, overcome critical socio-economic imbalances and inequities of the past’.
Watch the signing ceremony live here:
The bill has come with considerable opposition from several organisations and political parties.
Dirk Hermann, CEO of Solidarity, wrote to the president last night, informing him that Solidarity would take legal action within an hour of the signing ceremony.
“If the president signs the NHI Bill, knowing that it contains substantial flaws, he is certainly also responsible for the consequences thereof. This piece of legislation will be detrimental to all South Africans.
“The NHI Bill is populist, irrational and unaffordable. To put the entire country’s health at risk for the sake of votes is extremely reckless,” said Hermann.
Other political parties and organisations opposing the NHI Bill include:
- The DA
- ActionSA
- Business Unity SA
- South African Health Professionals Collaboration
- Health Funders Association
- South African Medical Association
- Business Leadership South Africa
