Update
NATIONAL NEWS - The body of kiteboarder Graham Howes has been recovered at sea following an extensive search effort yesterday, just off Eden on the Bay, Bloubergstrand, in Cape Town.
According to The Witness, National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) spokesperson Craig Lambinon confirmed yesterday that Howes (38) was found in the afternoon after his kiteboard and sail were first located at sea.
His body was recovered in the search area by the crew of a local motor yacht that had joined the rescue effort.
“Condolences are conveyed to the family and friends of Graham Howes, who was located and recovered at sea, sadly deceased, during ongoing search efforts,” said Lambinon.
“The extensive efforts by all involved in this incredible operation have helped the family with closure and are commended.”
Howes’ body has been taken into the care of the police and the Government Health Forensic Pathology Services. His family has requested privacy during this time.
Search launched after he went missing
The accomplished kiteboarder from Bloubergstrand was last seen on Sunday around 13:00 while kiteboarding offshore of Eden on the Bay. When he failed to return later that afternoon, his family alerted NSRI Melkbosstrand just before 20:00.
A large-scale search was immediately launched. NSRI rescue craft from Melkbosstrand, Table Bay and Yzerfontein joined in, supported by shoreline patrols, aerial infrared searches by the WC Government Health EMS Metro Rescue drone unit, and neighbourhood watch volunteers.
The Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre, Transnet National Ports Authority, SAPS, City of Cape Town Law Enforcement and Environmental Affairs officials at Robben Island were also placed on alert.
Telkom Maritime Radio Services broadcast an all-ships alert to vessels along the West Coast.
Extensive search effort
Search grids, drawn up using wind and current data, extended from Eden on the Bay out towards Robben Island, Bokpunt, Yzerfontein and Dassen Island.
Camera footage from local security confirmed Howes had been last seen on Sunday afternoon offshore of Eden on the Bay on his blue and black kiteboard with a white sail bearing red writing.
Lambinon said all agencies, private vessels and volunteers who assisted had played a vital role in the search.
