NATIONAL NEWS - The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is opening its student accommodation portal for all its beneficiaries and applicants who qualify for private student accommodation today, 6 January.
Students must use the portal to apply and reserve their spaces for the 2025 academic year.
The applications will remain open for all institutions until all NSFAS accredited properties are filled.
NSFAS launched the Student Accommodation Pilot Project during the 2022/23 academic year to ensure that:
Qualifying students are provided with conducive private accommodation.
Payments for student accommodation reflect the true value of services offered.
In 2023, the NSFAS increased the pilot to 23 Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges and 17 universities for the 2024 academic year.
In October 2024, NSFAS convened a workshop as part of reviewing the pilot project.
The workshop was attended by students, student leadership, accommodation providers, accommodation provider associations and institutions.
It was decided that NSFAS would end the pilot and implement its private student accommodation both at universities and TVET Colleges in 2025.

NSFAS will reevaluate the accredited properties that were not meeting the minimum norms and standards for student housing. Should such properties be found not to be compliant, their accreditation certificates will be revoked.
