MOTORING NEWS - According to the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), distracted driving caused 3 477 road deaths in 2015, so any app that helps to keep drivers' eyes on the road instead of on their screens is a welcome feature.
If you find it hard to let go of the phone while driving, Apple wants to help curb this addiction with a new app, "Do Not Disturb While Driving". It was announced at Apple's recent worldwide developers conference and will be launched in the last quarter of the year as part of iOS 11 for iPhone and iPad.
The mode activates when the phone detects that its owner is in a car and not using Apple CarPlay. It will then mute any incoming notifications and can even send automated text message replies explaining that the phone's user is driving.
According to Engadget, the app uses information about Bluetooth connectivity and nearby Wi-Fi networks to determine whether the phone is in a moving car. The feature will be automatically enabled when the phone is judged to be in a moving car, though it is possible to manually override it.
