MOTORING NEWS - Front-wheel drive cars have made a whole generation familiar with a new suspension noise - the cluck-cluck-cluck of a worn CV (constant velocity) joint.
But sometimes it's difficult to tell whether your suspension noise is a CV joint or something else. Fortunately, there's an easy test.
Find a quiet car park or similar open area with a smooth surface and turn the steering all the way to one side while you drive round in first gear. A worn CV joint will show up as a sharp, regular cluck-cluck-cluck sound and will need to be serviced, if not replaced.
Other knocking sounds, especially irregular ones and dull clunks, are probably due to different causes. Have them investigated by a suspension specialist for your peace of mind.
