SPANDAUVILLE NEWS - Condolences from across the country, but especially from Graaff-Reinet, poured in for the Holtzhausen family of Spandauville last week after they lost their son Malan (2) in a tragic accident.
According to the Graaff-Reinet SAPS, it is alleged that the toddler's mother, Marché, accidentally reversed into the boy, unaware that he was behind the vehicle.
Malan was rushed to Midlands Hospital but was declared dead upon arrival.
As news of the tragedy broke, hundreds of messages of support for the Holzhausen family was shared on social media.
"I cannot begin to imagine her heartache," said Lyn Berriman, "strength and healing to her and her family." "Your pain is our pain," said Mervin Mackelina, a teacher at Spandau Secondary. "Good luck to the family during this difficult time, may you get all the support you need from those close to you," said Johane Verwey, also from Graaff-Reinet.
Others close to the young family described them as loving and caring. "I am so sorry that something so awful happened to such wonderful people and parents," said family member Ulrika Leonard.
"We are here for you and we love you so much."
Capt Bradley Rawlinson, spokesperson of the Graaff-Reinet SAPS, said that a case of culpable homicide was opened. "The investigating officer is investigating the case, but there are no new developments," Rawlinson told the Advertiser on Monday.
