GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - A group of 12 enthusiastic SANParks Young Rangers from the Karoo National Park in Beaufort West enjoyed a memorable and educational visit to the Graaff-Reinet Museum on Tuesday 7 October - an experience many described as a dream come true.
The Young Rangers, also known as Junior Honorary Rangers (JHRs), form part of a national programme run by SANParks Honorary Rangers that encourages youth aged 12 to 18 to become involved with conservation and environmental awareness.
Through interactive lessons, outdoor activities and practical field experiences, participants learn about wildlife, ecosystems, and bushcraft skills.
The five-phase programme includes monthly meetings and year-end portfolios, with top achievers earning certificates and an accelerated route to becoming full SANParks Honorary Rangers at age 18.
During their visit, Dr Anziske Kayster, Khanya Mbaile and Silindokuhle Zito spent nearly three hours sharing insights with the group.
Topics included ancient rock art and fossils, life in early Graaff-Reinet, and the town’s role in the Anglo Boer War and the Second World War.
The session sparked curiosity and excitement among the young visitors, many of who expressed a deeper appreciation for South Africa’s cultural and natural heritage.
The Graaff-Reinet Museum extended heartfelt thanks to Rosemary Scheepers of the Karoo National Park for co-ordinating the annual visit, which continues to inspire new generations of conservation-minded leaders.
