GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - An old Japanese proverb states the following: “Better than a thousand days of diligent study is one day with a great teacher.”
Good teachers are an essential part of our community and the future of our children, and they’ve had to face their fair share of challenges amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
Here are a few reasons why teachers are the best, in honour of World Teachers' Day:
- They see potential
It can take encouragement from but one teacher to shape the interests of a learner, whether it be in the classroom, on the sporting grounds or during cultural activities. With a little guidance and encouragement, they can help learners reach their full potential. - They shape future careers
From doctors, engineers and writers to police officers, fashion designers and mechanics: everyone started in a classroom, where they had to learn the basics of biology, mathematics, English, or whichever subject they loved so much that they decided to make a career out of it. - They’re adaptable
This year alone had proved how adaptable teachers are. In many cases, classrooms were replaced with digital screens, and teachers had to think of creative ways to reach out to their learners. In Graaff-Reinet, schools even held ‘drive-throughs’ to give homework and lesson plans to learners. - They care for all their learners
Learners come from diverse backgrounds, have different interests and need different types of encouragement to help them succeed. A teacher often sees between 30 to 40 learners at a time and can see hundreds during a day in any given subject. Good teachers want to see all their learners succeed, and will go above and beyond to help them reach their goal. Teachers are also always there to offer advice and support. - They simplify the complex
To truly understand a subject it to be able to teach it, which is what teachers do daily. They can explain complex ideas and theories in a manner that students of all levels can understand it. The same goes for teachers who teach basic, essential skills, such a reading and writing.
Thank you to all our local teachers for your dedication to our community. We salute you!
