GRAAFF-REINET NEWS & VIDEO — They say the journey is the destination, but in a place like Graaff-Reinet, where the magnificent scenery of the Camdeboo National Park, the Valley of Desolation and the town with its surrounding game reserves is absolutely mesmerising, it’s safe to say that the ‘destination’ is the destination.
So, what’s to become of the ‘journey’? Well, that’s up to you.
But if you book a private helicopter charter to transport you up over the beautiful town of Graaff-Reinet, its surrounding mountain ranges and out to the scenic game reserves and beyond, it can pretty much be guaranteed that the ‘getting there’ bit will just as incredible as the end point.
Apart from this, heli-flips over Graaff-Reinet and surrounds might just be among the most beautiful in the country thanks to the spectacular topography of the area - on a heli-flip or chartered flight, you’ll get to stare down the chasms of the Valley of Desolation, gaze at Spandauskop at eye level, take in the interchange of heritage and modern buildings in the town itself and wonder at the sprawling Nqweba Dam and nearby farmlands.
Fly Karoo Air Services - Graaff-Reinet's first ever helicopter charter service - offer these kinds of bucket-list-worthy flights and on Monday, June 26, treated almost 80 guests to a one-of-a-kind heli-flip experience.
Fly Karoo - which has been operating in the area for several months now - celebrated its official launch this past Monday by inviting valued partners, friends and associates to an enjoyable early morning gathering at the Camdeboo National Park's historic Winterhoek homestead.
After being ferried to the secluded spot within the park by open 4x4 safari vehicles, guests were treated to delectable canapés and champagne with hot coffee and glühwein also on offer to ward off the early morning chill.
While enjoying the scenic vista, guests were then each treated to a short trip on the Fly Karoo's Robinson R66, Rolls Royce turbine engine helicopter - piloted by Franscois Fitzgerald.
Annarie Fitzgerald of Fly Karoo's Flight Operations, said: “The launch was a tremendous success with a fantastic turnout and represented the culmination of a monumental collaborative effort by the Fly Karoo team and we are enormously proud and excited to share this with the Graaff-Reinet public."
