GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - A matric farewell is a rite of passage to many young people, but the Covid-19 pandemic made it almost impossible for the Class of 2020 to wrap up their matric year with the traditional celebrations.
Following a long and uncertain wait, the Union High School 2020 matric group were finally able to celebrate a farewell dinner that was safe, fun and unique, at the Drostdy Hotel in Graaff-Reinet on Friday 11 December.
Many of the learners had planned their dresses and suits for months, and it was a very special day when they had the chance to share them with their friends, teachers and parents.
The outfits certainly didn’t disappoint and the excitement was evident in the smiles behind the masks.

Even though the learners were unable to bring partners, they did have an opportunity to enjoy a photography session with their friends just before a wonderful dinner was served.
"Union High School extends a grateful word of thanks to the Drostdy Hotel for hosting the event, the 2020 Grade 11 learners and their parents as well as the matric farewell committee led by head convenors Kyle-Luke du Preez and Hannah Watermeyer for the assistance with the year-long fundraising efforts and organisation of the event itself," said Mariëtte Burger, a spokesperson for the school.
"The school also extends a special word of thanks to Mrs Nelia Read, the teacher in charge of the farewell for her perseverance in seeing this event through and all her efforts in ensuring this evening was made possible.
"It is fantastic and humbling to know that no matter what the odds, Union High School can count on its teachers, learners, parents and community in general, to ensure the success of its endeavours."
