GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - Deputy Minister of Energy and Electricity, Samantha Graham-Maré, recently congratulated the Dr Beyers Naudé Local Municipality for completing the recoding of prepaid electricity meters in time for the token ID rollover on 24 November this year.
To recharge a prepaid meter, users must enter a unique 20-digit number, known as a token. This token is encoded with a unique value called a token ID (TID).
When a meter accepts a token, it stores the TID to prevent the same token from being used more than once.
The upper limit of these unique TIDs will be reached by 24 November, at which point the TID values will be 'rolled over' back to zero, hence the term TID rollover.
To prepare for the TID rollover, prepaid meter software needs to be updated from STS Edition 1 to STS Edition 2 to ensure that the meter can accept tokens for these new 'rolled over' TID values.
If this update is not completed, the prepaid meter will not accept tokens, leaving users without electricity.
Graham-Maré urged residents to follow the instructions to ensure that their side of the process is completed to avoid being without electricity on 24 November.
"If your meter was one of those that needed to be recoded, the first time you buy electricity after the recoding, you will need to input a 20-digit number into the meter to complete the recoding process.
"After that, the meter should function normally," she explained.
Residents who need more information about the rollover can contact their local municipal offices.
