GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - The final of the Central Karoo Cricket Union (CKCU) T20 competition took place at the Botanics Grounds in Graaff-Reinet on Saturday afternoon, 9 March, between Stallions Cricket Club and Masizakhe 1.
Stallions, batting first, lost two early wickets, but an 85-run partnership between Juandré Davids - 83 runs (nine × boundaries and three sixes) and Jean-Pierre Phillips - 26 runs, steadied the ship and the Stallions posted a competitive total of 161 runs for the loss of four wickets, in their 20 overs.
Masizakhe set about chasing down the 162 runs needed for victory, but lost wickets regularly and after 16 overs they had scored 97 runs for the loss of five wickets. This meant that they had to score 65 runs in four overs at 16,25 runs per over.
This proved to be a mountain too high to climb for the remaining batsmen and Masizakhe were dismissed for 115 runs.
Ashwell Adams claimed three wickets for 15 runs in his allotted four overs and Phillips, with three wickets for 26 runs, kept the opposition batsmen in tow.
A comprehensive 46-run victory for the Stallions team and the T20 title for the third year in a row.
Semi-final
One of the semi-finals of the CKCU T20 competition was played at the Botanics Grounds that morning, Saturday 9 March, between the Stallions Cricket Club and Murraysburg.
Jean-Pierre Phillips
Batting first, Stallions posted 171 runs for the loss of five wickets in their allotted 20 overs, thanks mainly to a 70-run knock (six × boundaries and 4 × sixes) by Samuel Bantom and useful contributions of 33 by Donovan Joubert, 26 by Davids and 21 by Phillips. The Murraysburg side were never in the game and were skittled out for a mere 41 runs.
This is the lowest total scored by a team in a T20 match against the Stallions.
The kingpins of the Stallions Cricket team
Michael Bantom - three wickets for seven runs and Jano Joubert - three wickets for 11 runs - gave Stallions a massive 130-run win and a place in the final against Masizakhe 1, who defeated the Willowmore side on the Fred Hufkie Oval in Kroonvale.
