GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - It appears that the dilapidated Collie Koeberg Sports Stadium in Graaff-Reinet will be in much better shape to host the much-anticipated Spandau and Asherville Interscools next weekend.
According to Mervin Mackelina of Spandau Secondary School, representatives from both schools accompanied Acting Community Services Director Bennie Arends on a recent site visit to the stadium.
"They were put at ease that the stadium will be in order in time for the clashes," Mackelina said.
The Advertiser reported earlier this year that the stadium is a cause of great concern among community members, sporting bodies and schools.
Fencing around the stadium was broken, doors hung off hinges, litter was strewn across the grounds and windows were broken.
When Hendrik Davids, chairperson of the Beyers Naudé Sports Council, proposed at the time that the sports council be given a budget to take over the maintenance of the complex, the municipality replied that there was no budget available.
However, when the Advertiser visited the grounds two weeks ago, work to restore the stadium to its former glory was already in full swing. The litter had been cleared, and workers were busy mending the broken wall and fencing around the grounds.

According to a member on the site, the work was being done through a partnership between the Business Chamber, the Dr Beyers Naudé Municipality and contractors.
The municipality failed to reply who was responsible for the restoration, or by when the stadium will be restored, in time for print.
