GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - A few Spandau High learners got to appreciate art when they recently paid a visit to the Hester Rupert Art Museum in Graaff-Reinet.
Located in Church Street, the museum is the fifth oldest church building in South Africa. It was built as a Dutch Reformed Mission Church in 1821.
The building was saved from demolition in 1965 by Dr Anton Rupert. Artists across South Africa donated their work to the newly-restored building, which was to become an art gallery.
In gratitude, the local council named the museum the Hester Rupert Art Museum in honour of Dr Rupert's late mother. The building was declared a national monument on 4 October 1968.
