KAROO NEWS - Siya Phambili Safe Haven reopened its doors at their new home in the old Telkom building in Neser Street on Friday 16 August.
The haven provides shelter for abused and victimised women and children for up to three months. The committee's vision is supporting and empowering women and children to live free from domestic violence and abuse in all its forms.
The reopening marks a significant milestone in their mission to provide a safe and nurturing environment for those seeking refuge and support, said Diane Bertram, chairperson of the Siya Phambili committee.
Many women apply for an interdict against their partners, but remain in the cycle of violence with no other place to go.
To escape domestic violence a shelter for abused women is all-important - a safe space where they receive the necessary help to function independently as soon as possible, says committee member, Moudy Calvert.
Siya Phambili was officially opened on 24 August 2022 in Church Street but unfortunately the building was sold at the end of last year and the haven had to relocate. In January this year they found the premises in Neser Street.
Domestic violence
Domestic violence is rife in Graaff-Reinet, a fact confirmed by the number of intakes at Khomanani Victim Centre, as well as the number of applications for interdicts - about 20 a month. Many of these women remain trapped in the cycle of violence if they are forced to stay in their unwanted circumstances. A safe haven is their only chance to start a new life.
Therapy to function
Siyaphambili Safe Haven continues to deliver services to abused women and children by empowering, securing and assisting them in their recovery process.
At the reopening good support was received from Correctional Supervision, Department of Health, CMR, Vuyani Safe Haven, Khomanani Victim Centre, Department of Social Services, SAPS, Drostdy Hotel, various churches and community members.
The Siya Phambili Safe Haven committee members are Diane Bertram (chairperson), Jeanette Stander, John and Julia Biggs, Liza Bekker, Miana Naude, Maudy Calvert and Cecile Jonker.
