GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - Twenty students from the Graaff-Reinet Raptors Martial Arts Club participated in the Eastern Cape provincial Mixed Martial Arts South Africa (Masa) championships that was held in Despatch on 10 May.
They gave exceptional performances, winning a total of 44 medals – 15 gold, 27 silver, and two bronze.
The following students were awarded medals:
• Darryl Tennant: Gold for points fighting, gold for continuous fighting, and gold for light MMA
• Grace Kitching: Gold for points fighting, gold for grappling, silver for continuous fighting, and silver for light MMA
• Darius Els: Gold for points fighting, gold for grappling, and silver for light MMA
• Reaglin Maarman: Gold for points fighting, gold for grappling, and silver for light MMA
• Jaqwan Ahmed: Gold for points fighting and gold for grappling
• Matthew Christoffels: Gold for points fighting and gold for grappling
• Liam Pienaar: Gold for light MMA and silver for grappling
• Renaldo van der Westhuizen: Gold for points fighting
• Cloë-Ann Fourie: Silver for continuous fighting, silver for grappling, silver for light MMA, and bronze for points fighting
• Marko Claassen: Silver for points fighting, silver for grappling, and silver for light MMA
• Mieke van den Bosch: Silver for points fighting and silver for continuous fighting
• Marlon Christoffels: Silver for points fighting and silver for continuous fighting
• Arno van der Merwe: Silver for points fighting and silver for continuous fighting
• Jean van Wyngaard: Silver for points fighting and silver for continuous fighting
• AJ Cronjé: Silver for points fighting and silver for grappling
• Frederik Steynberg: Silver for grappling and silver for light MMA
• Sinead Christoffels: Silver for grappling and silver for light MMA
• Elizabeth Fourie: Silver for light MMA and bronze for grappling
• Akeem Christoffels: Silver for light MMA
A total of 150 students competed in this Masa provincial championship, 53 of whom were from the Raptors club, with 20 representing the Graaff-Reinet Raptors.
The students who earned medals at provincial level will now have the opportunity to represent the Eastern Cape at the national Masa championships that will take place in Pretoria on 14 and 15 June.
Sensei Aletta van den Bosch expressed her immense pride in her students and said this opportunity is a tremendous honour.
She wished all her students the best of luck for the upcoming national event.
