GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - There were five convictions secured in the Graaff-Reinet magistrates’ court last week.
Two of these were for two separate cases of possession of Mandrax. One accused was sentenced to a fine of R900 or 90 days imprisonment, suspended for one year. He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm. The second case led to a fine of R3 000 or three months imprisonment, suspended for three years.
There were also two convictions for theft. In the first case, the accused was given a fine of R1 200 or nine months imprisonment. He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm. The second sentence was a fine of R300 or three months imprisonment.
The final sentence, for theft from a motor vehicle, left the accused with a sentence of 12 months imprisonment, of which 6 months is suspended for three years. Once again, the accused is unfit to possess a firearm.
There were 31 arrests in total, of which nine were for so-called minor offences. These were three each for being drunk and disorderly, drinking in public, and traffic offences.
For serious crimes, there was one arrest for sexual assault, six for assault GBH and two for common assault.
There were also two suspects arrested for housebreaking and theft, two for theft, one for stock theft, and one for attempted theft. Three suspects were arrested for shoplifting.
In addition, there was one arrest for common robbery, one for contravention of a protection order, and two for possession of Mandrax.
This week’s confiscations included knives, a radiator, pliers, Mandrax tablets, and a fuel pump.
