STEYTLERVILLE NEWS - The Steytlerville Barbarians hosted a huge event on Saturday 25 March to show off their outfits, equipment, and field branding for the new season. This was made possible through funding of R170 000 from the National Lotteries Commission (NLC).
According to Burton Jafta, vice-chairman of the Steytlerville Barbarians, they applied for the lotto funding about a year and a half ago and recently received it.
Since the members of the club are their most valuable asset, they decided to spend most of the money on them.
This decision was also motivated by the fact that many of the members are unemployed and cannot afford to buy their own outfits. He adds that a positive image is important and having uniform outfits and field branding contributes to that.
The Steytlerville Barbarians are grateful for this huge financial contribution from the NLC. They were able to pay it forward by donating 19 small soccer balls to the local soccer club, two crèches and an old age home in town.
The balls were received as a free gift from Tekkie Town in Uitenhage where they purchased 19 pairs of rugby boots. They are also grateful towards members of the community who have been supporting them. Specific mention is made of their regular sponsors, Paul Strydom (Karoo Drankwinkel) and Colin Hendricks (Colin's Tavern), whose loyal support has been invaluable, as well as Robby Archibald who recently donated R3 520 for seven pairs of rugby boots.
The venue for the event was made available by Skhungo Mvelase, devoted supporter of the Steytlerville Barbarians.
The Steytlerville Barbarians was established in 1999. At present they have two rugby teams and two netball teams, dedicated coaching staff and a management team.
The management of the Steytlerville Barbarains rugby teams also sport new branded outfits.
The A and B team rugby players with their new shirts.
