GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - Since the municipality installed speed cameras at both N9 entrances to Graaff-Reinet in July last year, the saying "haste makes waste" really holds true.
According to Dennis Fortuin, head of Protection Services in the DBNLM district, these speed meters were intended to ensure safer roads, but in addition to slowing down dangerous drivers, they have resulted in increasing the number of speed fines issued by the municipality.
From July to December 2024, a total of 73 783 fines were issued for speed violations.
This number can be broken down as follows:
- July: 8 277
- August: 15 634
- September: 16 731
- October: 10 358
- November: 4 849
- December: 17 934
From this it is evident that, while the ominous yellow boxes may have had a positive impact on road safety, the same can certainly not be said for the wallets of local drivers or those passing through town.
So next time you're tempted to disobey the rules of the road when entering or exiting town, just make sure that you are ready to pay up after smiling for the camera!
