EASTERN CAPE NEWS - Nearly 1 000 suspects were nabbed in all eight districts in the Eastern Cape in the first week of this year.
Arrests were made by foot soldiers in shopping malls, on beaches and in major cities in the province, helping to minimise serious and violent crimes during this busy time of the year.
WO Majola Nkohli says that, to ensure that all people and visitors in the province enjoyed their festive holidays, Provincial Commissioner Lt Gen Nomthetheleli Mene and her senior managers worked on the ground with the men and women in blue, intensifying manpower and resources in hotspot areas.
These weekly high-density operations focused on enhanced proactive policing and succeeded in squeezing the space for criminal elements and their illegal activities.
A total of 969 suspects were arrested in the Eastern Cape in the first seven days of 2024.
Nkohli says that a total of 16 113 vehicles were searched during roadblocks and at vehicle check points, 46 tracking operations were conducted, three illegal taverns were closed, and 1 756 inspections were conducted to ensure compliance with the liquor law at outlets.
The following items were confiscated:
- 5,24kg of dagga
- 127,98g of crystal meth (tik)
- 92g of Nyaope
- 176 Mandrax tablets
- 5,08g of Mandrax powder
- 1 117 litres of liquor
- 13 handguns (firearms)
- 2 homemade firearms
- 2 rifles
- 1 shotgun
- 9 vehicles
Mene said that these arrests were made through integrated policing with other law enforcement agencies and private security companies.
"Drunken drivers were not spared any mercy. Crimes such as rapes during this festive period are concerning and more has to be done to protect women from these sexual attacks," she said.
