ABERDEEN NEWS - There has been an outbreak of measles in the last week in Aberdeen, with three confirmed cases in preschool children.
Last Monday the first case was diagnosed, and once the department of health in Graaff-Reinet was notified, an outreach team was sent to assist the local Masekhane Clinic staff.
House to house visits were made in town, Lotusville and Thembalesizwe last week, and all children between the ages of six months and five years were given a check-up. The fully-staffed mobile clinic was also set up outside the Aberdeen library last Thursday.
All three of the children who were infected with the virus had received their routine immunisation on time, and according to a member of the department of health, this could well have prevented them from becoming more seriously ill.
The symptoms include a rash, usually present inside the mouth and on the tongue, and extreme tiredness.
Sometimes a fever is present, but two of the three children affected last week had no raised temperature.
