KAROO NEWS - The Clean Trade project has been launched and aims to facilitate the dignity and development of the Graaff-Reinet community.
Its purpose is to create work and also to beautify the environment - a system where recyclable materials are collected and exchanged for basic essentials.
Elaine Stanley thanked guests for joining the Clean Trade launch on Friday 23 August at the Cold Stream Restaurant.
Many people arrived with donations to support the project while Archie Pienaar entertained guests on his keyboard.
The project aims to address two of the most pressing issues of our time: environment degradation and the high levels of unemployment and poverty, said Stanley.
The concept has been successfully implemented in other cities, and Stanley and partners are excited to bring it to Graaff-Reinet.
How Clean Trade works
A 40 ft red container has been secured which will serve as the Clean Trade Shop located on the premises of Boundless in Industry street.
“We encourage unemployed individuals in need, to collect rubbish in their local areas, focusing on spaces where litter is prevalent. Bags will be available for them to use. In exchange for what they bring in, they will receive tokens to the amount based on the quantity collected. These tokens can be used to shop at the Clean Trade Shop in the red container."
How you can help
Vouchers are available for purchase and will be sold at places like the Freedom Café at Freedom Church, Quest Garage, 60 Cradock street; Karoo Community Church, LVS and at the Tourism Office.
Clean Trade aims to also engage with local schools, teaching learners about the environment, the impact of litter and how to make a difference.
