Update
KAROO NEWS - As was reported by the Graaff-Reinet Advertiser last week, FF Plus Councilor Adriaan van Heerden recently lodged an official complaint with the Green Scorpions about the dire state of the municipal landfill site on the outskirts of Aberdeen.
Van Heerden says the site poses environmental issues and health risks.
The most serious risk is its proximity to a borehole which serves as one of Aberdeen's primary sources of drinking water. It is also right next to the Kraai River which flows through town.
Van Heerden believes the water is polluted by toxic substances from the landfill site, which drain into the underground water table and river.
Illegal dumping
Many Aberdeen residents say an issue of even greater concern is the illegal dumping of rubbish next to the Kraai River and even into the river.
The river is littered with household waste, including disposable nappies and all sorts of unhygienic items.
Aggravating problems with waste removal, illegal dumping is widespread across Aberdeen - on street corners, empty plots, and just about everywhere else.
Caring residents of the town stand aghast at the absolute disregard for nature by litterbugs. Municipal spokesperson Vuyisa Jantjies last week urged residents to cooperate with the municipality to ensure that all areas remain liveable.
The Advertiser is awaiting a response from Jantjies regarding allegations that sewage is pumped into the Kraai River and the apparent lack of law enforcement to stop illegal dumping.
