KAROO NEWS - The knitters and crochet experts who support Camdeboo Hospice's Knit-a-thon are getting into the swing of things, as the pile of squares to go towards knee blankets for patients, grows rapidly.
Two informal gatherings have been held at the Assembly Café in Caledon Street and with 29 crafters enrolled in the project, the goal to provide 91 Graaff-Reinet Hospice patients with a blanket each before winter arrives, should be easily achieved.
Generous donations of wool and needles, as well as crochet hooks, have been received, but the volunteers have already used up most of the wool. If anyone could spare some - preferably double knit or chunky - or make a donation to purchase more wool, it would be greatly appreciated.
The project aims to:
- create awareness of the serves offered by Hospice
- to make blankets for the patients
- to raise money.
The money is raised from sponsorships, and the knitters have been asking their friends to make a donation for every 20cm square that they complete.
"We initially asked for a sponsorship of R30 per square, but at the rate some of these ladies are knitting, that would make it a very expensive exercise," joked Hospice fundraiser Colleen Buckle. "We are very grateful for all donations, either as a lump sum, or a sponsorship per square. Every cent raised will be used for patient care costs," she said.
The supply of blankets has been augmented by a generous donation from the ladies of Adendorp's NGK.
An added bonus for those who join in the group sessions is the sense of camaraderie and fellowship working together for a good cause.
