KAROO NEWS - Vuyani Safe Haven's recent AGM included a touching performance by some of the younger children led by Vice-chair Ampie Jordaan and the caregivers.
The children sang two heartfelt songs that deeply moved everyone present.
Dedication and service
Elaine Stanley, chairperson of Vuyani Safe Haven expressed sincere gratitude to the board members for their dedication and service.
She announced that all board members have agreed to serve for the next term. Stanley also acknowledged, with much appreciation, the improvements and programmes made possible through the generous support of Vuyani's donors and the dedication of the staff.
Contributions needed
Paul Merifield, Vuyani's treasurer, presented the financial statement and said that while Vuyani's finances are in good standing, there is a current deficit. This highlights the need for continued support from both the community and Vuyani's long-time donors.
Both Stanley and Merifield underscored the importance of ongoing support for Vuyani's building project, which is crucial for the continued growth and development of the safe haven. A special moment followed when Hildegarde Brummer, Vuyani's manager, presented a 10-year-long service award to Nathalia Koetaan, one of Vuyani's Child and Youth Care Workers. Nathalia has been an indispensable right-hand to both Brummer and the social worker, and the go-to person for the children whenever they have a need.
Play is a therapeutic tool
Guest speaker Diane Bertram, a social worker with many years of experience, is now in private practice and has been instrumental in providing therapy for many of Vuyani's children, particularly those requiring intervention for trauma or disruptive behaviour.
Diane highlighted the significance of play as a therapeutic tool for children. She encouraged all attendees to tap into their inner child by selecting a toy from her box of playthings. Soon, the room was filled with laughter as adults donned masks, crowns, and played with toy vehicles or dolls.
Bubbles floated through the air as some attendees burst them, while others tested out toy swords or cars. After the playful session, Diane distributed a summary of play therapy guidelines, explaining the importance of this medium in helping children, particularly those at Vuyani, heal and grow.
The meeting concluded with refreshments generously provided by Freedom Church, who also hosted the event.
