ABERDEEN NEWS — Aberdeen Garden and Social Club enjoyed a social meeting last Thursday at the Aberdeen Bowling Club, where the novices present were introduced to the game, and everyone enjoyed a braai together afterwards.
There was an excellent turnout, with 16 Club members and three guests, supported by seven members of the Bowling Club.
After the normal admin notices, members were welcomed to the Bowls Club by host Tony Dardis.
He divided all present into four teams, with each team made up of a mixture of novices and members of the Bowling Club who could explain how the game is played.
Initially rolling the bowls on the wet grass took some effort, but gradually, as the sun dried out the grass, the players had to adjust to the strength needed for rolling as the bowls were moving much more quickly. All the teams played six ends, and then the players took a very welcome tea break.
Dick van Wyk then lit the fire and the social part started in earnest. Some enthusiastic members returned for the second round of bowls while the meat was cooking. The members enjoyed a lovely lunch in the clubhouse and left quite late. The purpose of this meeting was twofold: to introduce members of the Aberdeen Garden and Social Club to the game of bowls, as the Bowling Club really wants more people to join. Secondly, they wanted a day just filled with fun and at the same time learning a new skill. The members of Aberdeen Garden and Social Club would like to thank the Bowling Club for having them and wish them all the success needed to grow into a big club once more. Instead of green fees, the visitors made a donation.
The next meeting will be on Thursday, 3 May. There will be a workshop on the basics of pottery, and it will be held at the home of Dick and Estelle van Wyk, 15 Grey Street. This meeting will be for members only.
