GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - Union High School's first hockey team girls have transformed their hard work into brand-new Grays hockey team backpacks, thanks to funds generated from their recent bottle recycling fundraising project.
The journey began as part of the 'Trash2Cash' initiative, run by Montego Pet Nutrition's NGO, Montego Cares.
Now in its fourth year, this project has been making a significant impact in Graaff-Reinet, where community members have come together to recycle bottles for a greater cause.
By collecting and recycling over 5.3 tonnes of plastic from March 2024 to February 2025, the initiative has not only contributed to environmental sustainability but has also provided essential items to local organisations, including sports equipment and educational tools.
The hockey girls saw the fruits of their labour first-hand. With the generous compensation of R33p/kg for the bottles collected - significantly higher than typical recycling rates - participants are motivated to engage actively in the initiative.
The girls can now experience tangible results for their hard work, using their new high-quality backpacks at the field.
