Update
GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - Dr Beyers Naudé Local Municipality Mayor Willem Safers has noted with concern the "unfounded allegations of fraud" that led Councillor Xolile Galada to open a Fraud case against the municipality on 6 February [Galada opens fraud case against muni, Graaff-Reinet Advertiser, 5 February 2025].
In a media alert dated 5 February, he said the allegations relating to the recent awarding of a security services tender have been in the public domain for some time, but that the municipality has no evidence supporting these allegations.
He welcomed the fact that those who claim to have evidence have now taken the appropriate action by reporting the matter to the South African Police Service (SAPS).
Reaffirming the municipality’s commitment to fully cooperating with the SAPS investigation, he urged anyone with relevant evidence to come forward and present it to him in his capacity as mayor.
He explained that internal municipal processes are separate from those of SAPS and said both will follow their own course to a conclusion.
He appealed to all stakeholders to allow law enforcement agencies to conduct their investigation without interference and assured residents and stakeholders that the outcome of the matter will be communicated transparently.
