GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - The DA encourages all road users to approach the roads this Easter holiday with heightened care.
Every motorist and pedestrian must approach the roads with caution by remaining vigilant and sober – not only for their own safety but for the safety of others.
In a media release on 15 April, DA spokesperson on mobility, Prof Nomafrench Mbombo, said that the Western Cape recorded 31 fatal crashes where 33 lives were lost over the Easter holiday in 2024.
"This is an increase of five crashes and six deaths from 2023 in the province," she said.
"Of these fatalities in 2024, pedestrians accounted for 35.5% nationally, emphasising the shared responsibility of both drivers and pedestrians when approaching the roads this Easter holiday."
Pedestrians and drivers are encouraged to plan ahead and leave early, avoid fatigue by taking regular breaks, never drive or walk under the influence, and respect other road users to share the road responsibly.
"This Easter holiday we want to avoid and reduce the fatal crashes and deaths in the province," said Mbombo.
"Every road death is one too many. The DA in the Western Cape encourages all motorists, particularly those going on long trips, to employ the free safety checks provided by the Western Cape Department of Mobility.
To all road users this Easter holiday, please buckle up and avoid walking or driving under the influence of alcohol.
This will help ease the burden on our traffic officers, law enforcement personal and emergency care workers who are committed to keeping our roads safe."
