JANSENVILLE NEWS - The Dr Beyers Naudé Local Municipality’s FF Plus councillor, Adriaan van Heerden, has raised serious concerns about the protest action in Jansenville on Tuesday, 17 June.
The police confirmed that this particular protest action started at about 05:00 that morning, and that trucks were used to block the R75 at both entrances to the town, as well as the R339 to Klipplaat.
According to Van Heerden, multiple reports indicate that the individuals involved in the protest engaged in unauthorised strike action, as it was undertaken without proper notification or any form of official sanction.
“It contravenes both public order regulations and labour law provisions, thereby constituting an illegal strike,” he said.
Van Heerden also regards the protest action as reckless, since, according to him, it placed public safety in jeopardy and disrupted the daily functions of the community.
“The trucks were intentionally left immobile, with the keys removed, thereby halting all vehicular passage and impeding emergency services, commuter transit and general public movement,” he said.
“Such disruptive action, carried out without community consultation or forewarning, has fuelled public distress and heightened tensions in the area.”
Based on this, Van Heerden requested that both the SAPS and the Dr Beyers Naudé municipal management urgently investigate this unlawful action, identify the individuals involved, and ensure that they are held accountable in accordance with the law.
He also requested the implementation of urgent and effective measures to prevent the recurrence of such disruption, as well as a written response outlining the intended steps toward resolution.
“The safety, order and well-being of Jansenville residents must be a shared priority,” he stated.
“I trust this matter will receive the immediate attention it warrants.”
