ALIWAL NORTH NEWS - Yesterday, 5 March, the Aliwal North Magistrate’s Court postponed the case against Anelle de Bruin (46), the wife of a prominent local farmer accused of plotting to kill him in a staged ‘farm attack’.
The accused is charged with conspiracy to commit murder.
According to Luxolo Tyali, the National Prosecuting Authority’s (NPA) regional spokesperson, she made a brief appearance yesterday, and the prosecution applied for postponement for further investigations as there were still some outstanding statements, photo albums and cellphone records.
The matter will be back in court on 23 April.
The accused is still out on R2 000 bail, with special conditions that she does not return to the farm, and that she has supervised visits with their children.
She was arrested on 9 January after the police had received a tip-off from a middleman whom she allegedly approached to find hitmen to kill her 56-year-old husband.
According to police investigations, the accused had already paid the middleman a down payment and promised to pay the remainder after the killing was executed and insurance payouts made.
She was allegedly recorded giving instructions that after they had shot her husband on their farm, the hitmen should shoot the family’s dogs and vehicle tyres to make it look like a farm attack.
She also allegedly informed the middleman of how long it would probably take the neighbouring farmers to respond to the attack.
She reportedly stood to inherit more than R50m in the event of her husband’s death.
“The NPA seriously pursues cases of this nature that affect the safety and well-being of our communities to ensure justice for victims of crime,” said Tyali.
