GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - The final of the Human Rights Soccer Tournament at uMasizakhe Stadium on Sunday afternoon, 23 March, saw Black Arrows beating Keegan Cosmos 3-0 to take home the title.
The tournament, jointly organised by the local football association and the referees committee, was held to celebrate Human Rights Day.
Sixteen teams participated in the 'money tournament' from Friday to Sunday.
This term is used when clubs collect money themselves through 'money games', where teams raise money through fun events and put in into a pool to be used as prize money due to the absence of sponsors.
Clubs that could not contribute financially nevertheless played games in their own areas for entertainment on Human Rights Day.
Due to lack of funds, the committed referees went hungry for most of the final day, refereeing games back to back without receiving anything to eat.
They eventually received food before the final game.
The organiser of the tournament, Thembela Futshane, appealed to potential sponsors to help keep the communities entertained by sponsoring events such as this.
