KAROO NEWS - Asherville Secondary School honoured Alfred Pannies (66), former chairperson of the school governing body, on Thursday 13 June. Pannies passed away on 10 June after a brief illness.
On Thursday morning, teachers from Asherville visited Pannies' residence in Asherville to pay their respects.
"It is still very sad and unreal to know that Mr Pannies is no longer with us. I think many people are still in shock," said Hadron Lamont, a teacher at the school. "Mr Pannies was a very dear person, always calm and composed even when faced with the most challenging situations in his life. He was a pillar of support, a guiding light, and a beacon of hope when navigating through dark times."
His family meant everything to him, and he did everything for them with joy and care. He always mentioned his children by their full names, and extended his care not only to his blood relatives but also to his nieces and the community. His door was always open to everyone, and he selflessly helped others, sometimes at his own expense. Material wealth held little importance to him; he was a true example of someone who lived for his loved ones. Seeking revenge or getting even was never on his agenda.
Forgiveness was important to him, enabling him to move forward each day with respect, kindness, humility and his characteristic wisdom. He knew when to speak and when to listen, quickly diffusing heated situations with calmness.
Alfred Pannies served as a teacher at Asherville Secondary School, chairperson of the school governing body, a parent of the school, a friend, advisor, mediator and confidant. The school considers itself privileged to have known such an exceptional man and learned many valuable lessons from him.
They learned:
- How to listen to each other
- How to care for one another
- How to love and support each other
- To consider others' perspectives in decision-making
- To be reliable and trustworthy
Pannies is survived by four children.
