GRAAFF-REINET — On 20 and 23 April, Government Communications in partnership with the Department of Home Affairs and local Community Development Workers (CDW) in Graaff-Reinet went on a drive to educate and inform the local community about Government's 0% tolerance for corruption.
On average corruption costs South Africa approximately R27 billion each year.
This money could be used to provide services to the communities of South Africa, instead.
Corruption comes in many different forms such as fraud, bribery and embezzlement. Corruption, however, is not a one-sided affair as it requires a corruptor as well. In order to unroot corruption completely, the officials committing corruption as well as the community member (corruptor) needs to be addressed.
Government is currently running an Anti-Corruption Campaign to ask community members to stand together with government to rid South Africa of corruption.
Community members can assist by:
- Refraining from offering bribes to government officials.
- Refraining from using positions of power for their own gain, such as in School Governing Body.
- Refraining from issuing false statements.
- Reporting corruption on the National Anti-Corruption Hotline (0800 701 701)
