GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - One of the most memorable moments of this year’s interschool Cultural Evening came from Hoër Volkskool Graaff-Reinet learner Anna-May Hayes, whose winning speech left the audience deeply moved.
In her address, Anna-May touched on a theme close to our hearts - the age-old comparison between Union High and Hoër Volkskool, both prestigious schools with an extraordinary history, each a gem in his own right.
With poise and insight, she reminded the attendants that while one school is Afrikaans and the other English, the two schools are in fact two sides of exactly the same coin.
She highlighted how each school’s strength is vital to the other’s success and how the wider Graaff-Reinet community flourishes when both schools thrive.
Her words echoed a message that both schools have long been passionate about: that true progress comes not from rivalry alone, but from mutual respect, encouragement and shared pride in each other’s achievements.
So inspired were Union High by the depth of her message that Anna-May was invited to re-deliver her speech on camera, ensuring that the whole of Graaff-Reinet could hear her words. This video can be seen on Union High’s Facebook platform.
Besides celebrating her eloquence, the video is also a reminder of the unifying spirit that binds these two historical schools and Graaff-Reinet together.
