KAROO NEWS AND VIDEO - Two people were killed and several others injured, some seriously, in an accident on the R61 between Aberdeen and Beaufort West this weekend.
The accident happened at about 06:10 on Sunday morning, 23 December, when the driver of a Toyota Quantum minibus heading towards Aberdeen allegedly lost control of the vehicle. It then swerved across the road, straight into the path of an oncoming Toyota Corolla.
The male driver and a female passenger in the Corolla passed away at the scene of the accident. It is thought that they were travelling from the former Transkei to Cape Town. The three other passengers in the car were seriously injured.
There were no fatalities from the taxi, but many injuries, ranging from slight to serious.
Many people were angered when a constant stream of minibus taxi, with drivers obviously frustrated at the delay, decided to take matters into their own hands and made an alternative route through private property, flattening fence and veld in the process.
In less than five hours today (Monday 24 December), more than 300 people had shared a video of this posted on facebook by a resident of a neighbouring property.
Despite some comments that the traffic police and SAPS should have controlled this behaviour, it was pointed out that the sheer volume of traffic on the route would have made it impossible for a few officers to control once the situation escalated.
