GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - Drunk drivers are facing serious consequences during the festive season.
Road Safety operations with special focus against drunk driving were intensified all across the Eastern Cape as the province continues with its drive to curb road crashes that has claimed many lives this Festive Season.
The Eastern Cape has arrested a total of 95 people for driving under the influence of alcohol in just five days, between Christmas Day and 30 December.
The majority of those were arrested on Saturday, 28 December, bringing the total for drunk driving arrests to over 500 since 1 December.
"Festivities to usher in the New Year are set to reach their climax by midnight into the early hours of 1 January 2025 with loads of alcohol expected to be consumed," says Unathi Binqose, road safety media representative for the Department of Transport.
Law enforcement officers are deployed in large numbers to deal with any transgressions.
Road users are urged to abide by the law, and not to consume alcohol before or whilst driving.
