ABERDEEN NEWS - Pungent plants on display at the 13 February meeting of the Aberdeen Garden and Social Club had the 13 members in attendance holding their noses, but only in the literal sense.
Luckily it was not Friday the 13th and the plants a mere curiosity brought along to the house of hostess Noelene Palmer by club member Cathryn Uys.
Uys showed off some impressive stapelia grandiflora plants boasting flowers that smell rather like rotten meat.
Commonly known as the African starfish cactus, the plants attract flies and are best planted well away from the house.
No noses were put out of joint, and a fun general knowledge quiz - which made most members realise how little they know of current events - was enjoyed by all.
After a report on the challenges facing the animal welfare organisation in Aberdeen, CARE, the members unanimously decided to donate R500 from the club funds towards the outstanding vet bill.
The next meeting will be held on 12 March, with the theme and venue to be announced.
