GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - Graaff-Reinet Lions hosted a wonderful Spring Tea at St James’ Church hall recently. Many glorious flowery spring outfits and hats were on display, with some lovely touches of creativity in the headgear.
The Lions’ president, Gerald Buisman, welcomed everyone and gave information on some projects run by the Lions in the community.
Funds raised from the event will go towards the Lions’ diabetes awareness campaign, and the speakers at the event focussed on this theme.
Liz Savage spoke about diabetes, and Lorraine Wessels then introduced the guests to a range of herbal dietary supplements. One of these is balsam pear tea, which has properties for lowering blood glucose, with the added benefit of promoting weight loss.
After the talks, the guests enjoyed a magnificent afternoon tea, whilst Archie Pienaar played golden oldies on the keyboard. There was a lucky draw, with a beautiful tapestry worked by Lion Brian Hough as the main prize. This was won by Ann Walter Murray.
On 14 November, the Lions will sponsor free diabetic testing at Graaff-Reinet Clicks, and some of the funds raised will go to providing equipment for that. Retired nursing sisters will perform glucose and blood pressure testing.
Diabetes awareness pamphlets and posters will also be sponsored for the general public.
