KAROO NEWS - The word is spreading about the Wolf Wind Farm Project by Red Rocket, 5km north of Wolwefontein in the Klein Winterhoek mountain range.
The Wolf Wind Farm, currently under construction, is destined to be a powerhouse of energy, generating an estimated 360GWh annually.
This formidable output is geared to meet the energy requirements of around 110 000 households yearly, marking a substantial leap towards a more sustainable future.
Beyond mere statistics, the project also aims to mitigate a considerable 384 000 tons of CO2 emissions.
Seventeen Vestas wind turbines, comprising five massive V162-6,2MW machines and twelve cutting-edge V163-4,5MW machines, collectively boasting a capacity of 85MW, will be strategically poised at Wolf Wind Farm.
The success of the Wolf Wind Farm Project is rooted in Red Rocket's triumph in round five of the South African Government's Renewable Energy Independent Power Producers Procurement Programme.
The 17 wind turbines will be aligned on the mountaintop.
Jaco Brits, head of project, procurement, and construction management - solar at Red Rocket said, "With the official kick-off in February, the Wolf Wind Farm Project is progressing swiftly. Current efforts are concentrated on laying the groundwork for the wind turbines, including the construction of a two-kilometre road winding up to side of the Winterhoek Mountain range. We are anticipating the first shipment of blades that is scheduled to arrive in South Africa early next year, marking a pivotal moment in the project's timeline."
The energy harvested from the Wolf Wind Farm is to be sold to Eskom Holdings SOC through a power purchase agreement spanning two decades.
The Wolf Wind Farm stands as a testament to Red Rocket's unwavering commitment to innovation. With the deployment of the latest Vestas wind turbines, the project showcases cutting-edge technology in the renewable energy sector.
These turbines, with a total nameplate capacity of 85MW, are poised to significantly elevate the project's efficiency.
Beyond its role as an energy provider, the wind farm is poised to leave an indelible mark on the local community. Red Rocket anticipates contributing over R200m to community development over the next two decades through a variety of social projects.
As the Wolf Wind Farm Project takes shape, it symbolises the harmonious coexistence of nature and technology.
The project is scheduled for commissioning in Q4 2024. The Advertiser will keep readers informed about the way the wind blows at Wolf Wind Farm.
The 2km road leading up to the wind turbines is still being constructed.
