GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - While Karoo town Graaff-Reinet continues to welcome on-and-off bouts of rain, not everything will survive the drought.
Due to wind, two enormous dead pine trees came crashing down on Noord Street, at the back of Town Hall, on Sunday morning 16 February.
"Luckily it was a Sunday and there were no people there," said Nicola Woods, one of the people who photographed the incident.
According to Edwardine Abader, acting spokesperson for the Dr Beyers Naudé Municipality, the incident caused an electricity interruption to houses on Noord Street, as the trees fell on overhead cables.
"Electricians were immediately on site, and the power was restored the same day," she told the Advertiser. Although the road was cleared, Abader said that the tree stumps are still being removed.
More dead trees can be found in Graaff-Reinet, and many residents fear that property will be damaged or people injured if the trees are not safely removed.

Resident Eira Maasdorp said she has contacted the Dr Beyers Naudé Municipality about the issue. "The dead trees look terrible, and new trees need to be planted."
Maasdorp believes that the old trees need to be chopped down and replaced, as it would take too long to remove the trees roots and all.
"It's so sad to see the dead trees. I counted 20 on Caledon Street alone."
Abader said that the Community Service Department is aware of similar dead trees in Graaff-Reinet, and is attending to them.
"Currently, no new trees will be planted as a result of the drought," Abader added.
